One of more interesting parts of my job as a photojournalist involves sharing my experiences and wisdom of photography with kids.

A smile is worth a thousand words, and maybe more in her case! How else could I tell the story about eight-year-old (8 - 1/2 as she says) Rachel Caliguiri fighting Cerebral Palsy without writing a word. With a soft voice and shy demeanor, she whispered to me that she gets to go to Disney World when she can walk by herself.

Most nature photography is a no-brainer - it looks much more beautiful in color. But, these shaded falls, in the shade of the surrounding maple and oak trees screamed black and white!

While I was waiting to photograph Gordon Webster, a former personal bagpiper for Queen Elizabeth at the New Hampshire School of Scottish Arts, I noticed these two dancers practicing something out of the ordinary - a Scottish Highland Sword Dance. All I could think of was “ouch!”

Here’s a couple photos that didn’t make it into today’s newspaper from the clowning class at Saint Christopher School in Nashua.

After the interview, Ryan’s brother, Liam proudly set his camera on the dining room table in front of me. I thought perhaps he was comparing the size of my company Canon Mark III to his plastic point and shoot toy. What neat little eyeballs it has on the top. I don’t have those on mine. And it talks too. How cool!

If you ask any photographer, they will tell you bigger is better. If you asked Debbie she will tell you bigger is better! So is bigger really better?

Don’t worry when your son leaves one in his pants pocket, and it gets run through the laundry (car wash). After all, he just might become a newsphotographer some day!

Note: This is the third posting in an ongoing series of photographs I will be publishing throughout 2009. All of the “Backyard Wonders” photographs in this series will be taken in my own back yard. My challenge is to see how many different kinds of landscape and wildlife photos I can come up with by the end of the year. Enjoy!
