Hawking donuts…Raptor takes unique perch over downtown

Filed under General, Photojournalism, humor by bob hammerstrom at 5:07 pm

While shooting still photos inside Jackie’s Diner today, I spotted this hawk atop a building in downtown Nashua. Now, a hawk isn’t a new sight for those working or shopping on Main Street, but what it was sitting on, made me do a double-take.

Hawks are pretty common in New Hampshire, both in the wild, and in the city of Nashua. I’ve seen them on utility poles, street signs and flying overhead, but never on a Dunkin donuts billboard!

The photo possibilities were screaming through my mind. Limited to a medium range 70-200mm zoom lens, I just couldn’t capture it close enough. A quick few shots out Jackie’s window would do for now. Don Himsel and I were there shooting a multimedia video about the economy and customer’s outlooks on 2009, for www.nashuatelegraph.com on Sunday.

I kept thinking, “Is this bird sitting up there because of the enormous photo of food below it, or simply for a great view of the ground below? Is it dreaming of a hot cup of java, or frozen soda along the curb? Would it prefer a jelly donut, or a beak full of road kill?”

What do you think?
