It’s deer hunter, it’s a garbage picker-upper…No, it’s a Telegraph photographer!

The next time you drive by a person wearing one of these glow-in-the-dark, eye-blinding vests, don’t be frightened, they aren’t deer hunting along the Everett Turnpike. And, even though they may be carrying a Canon in their arms, it’s not the garbage man. So just who is it you ask that is a stronger shooter than the average amateur, faster than a state highway worker, and can leap tall guardrails in a single bound?
If you haven’t guessed it by now, it’s a Telegraph journalist. You know, the ones that have to go out on the highways when they get the slipperiest, hover over large potholes for that annual spring photo, and often negotiate stopped traffic for a picture of the wreck.

Telegraph Business Editor Ashley Smith models one of the new vests that photographers and writers will be wearing when reporting along roadways funded by the federal government.
So why is it you ask that we wear this eye-catching new wardrobe? After all, my colors are not fluorescent yellow and orange. I’m more of an earthly-colors guy. Yup, the United States government has made it a law for person’s working along federally-funded highways, including the media, to wear the vests.
It’s actually not a bad idea, and you’ll have no complaints from me. It beats have a tire tread tattoo running up your back, or being forced to spill the morning’s coffee from a sleepy wandering commuter!
