Ben Franklin checks out the new technology

So what would Ben Franklin have done if someone showed him a digital video camera back in the 1700’s? I’ll tell you. He would probably have jumped right out of his knickers!

Staff photo by Bob Hammerstrom--Even Ben Franklin had his camera ready for presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain to appear during a rally Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at Saint Anselm College in Manchester.
Franklin was an inventor, writer, diplomat, businessman, musician, scientist, and humorist, but I don’t think he would have found the digital video images funny or thought provoking. Although he pioneered electricity, seeing moving images appear on a tiny screen more than 250 years ago, would have been just as much shock to him, as being struck by lightning flying a kite.
This Ben is actually Dick Elliott of Andover, Mass., who portrays the character in Faneuil Hall at Quincy Market in Boston. He was at Saint Anselm College for presidential hopeful, John McCain’s campaign rally.
It was interesting that I had photographed him before, as did a Boston photographer at the event. I can’t remember which school he was in at the time, but it was either in Nashua or Fitchburg, Mass. The man gets around, and hasn’t aged a bit!
