Backyard wildlife gallery

Some photographers spend thousand of dollars traveling far and wide,
hiding behind blinds for days, to get a photo of wildlife for their
collection. Not me!

Yes I will admit I have traveled to the local dump to photograph a bear,
locked up my brakes on a mountain highway in British Columbia to click
frames of a huge elk, and squeezed by telephoto lens through a cage to
capture a moment with a bald eagle. I've even hand-fed a mountain goat
pretzels while photographing him with a wide angle lens in the Canadian
Rockies. But some of the best wildlife photography is right in my own
back yard.

While eating breakfast and looking out my dining room window at the bird
feeders, my son noticed this owl perched on branches about 10 feet above
the feeders, and the same distance from our house. What was amazing to
us was how still it stood ALL MORNING! Only its head rotated back and
forth in search of breakfast. An hour or so later, a mouse appeared from
the snow bank below, oblivious to the predator above. The owl swooped
down quickly, snatched the rodent, and headed off to another tree to
feast.

Luckily my 300mm lens was inside the house and ready on a moment's
notice. While my family watched out the window, I sat on the floor and
fired frame after frame of the owl until my battery died. I have plenty
of good ones to choose from, switching to a smaller 70-200 zoom lens to
show the branches twisted around him as camouflage. This shot is nearly
full frame!

I've also photographed deer, gray fox, a pheasant, and humming birds
from my back yard.

An early morning fire brough Nashua Fire Rescue to Mason Street today.
Extreme cold and extreme heat place extra demands on firefighters.
Heavy-duty work with full bunker gear is taxing. I saw steam rising
from this firefighter as crews were cleaning up gear at the scene. The
digital thermometer outside of Nashua House of Pizza read 17 degrees at
about 9 a.m.

change in the air

Technology is changing media companies. Particularly newspapers.
Newspapers are forcing changes in technology and all around culture and
how we take in and use information is mixing it all up.

Here at The Telegraph we've jumped head first into New Media and strive
to offer more depth to stories with audio, video and audio slideshows.
It forces journalists to multitask even more. Not only do photographers
here juggle still cameras, lenses and lighting gear but now we've added
audio recorders, microphones and video cameras. When we return from the
field and edit we tackle new software to build stories. It can all be
overwhelming and distract from the core responsibility of good
storytelling. I think we do a good job. We have a great staff. You'll
see their photography, videography and hear their audio projects
throughout our site. On this blog you may see stuff that didn't make it
into print for one reason or another. You'll also read stories on how
the photos were taken or the circumstances around getting the pics.
Also, you may find interesting discussions about changes in how we do
what we do and why.

Here's an image from staff photographer Bob Hammerstrom. What's
interesting here is that it's not a photograph taken with a still
camera. This is what we refer to as a frame grab. It's a fraction of a
clip he took while producing a video on the Martin Luther King Day event
in Hollis. This didn't run in the newspaper but it could have. This is
something newspapers all over are discussing and experimenting with as
they embrace new technology. The Dallas Morning News, San Jose Mercury
News and the Detroit Free Press have run frame grabs with varying
degrees of regularity. Is this a good idea? Some say sure. Some say
no. Regardless this is something that will change how we deliver news
to you and how, and whether, you trust us as journalists.

It's cold. Not super cold but cold enough to have Mike bring another cord of wood to the house. Before my oldest and I can get it into the barn I thought I'd revisit this photo for our first photo department blog entry. I made a trip to the seacoast awhile back and saw this frame coming together as I parked the Jeep near Cinammon Rainbow surf shop. This was the best of a few pics I made. Nice warm light. -Don Himsel
