Hiking and hawk watching on Watatic

Filed under wildlife by andrew wolfe

You don’t have to be a birder to appreciate the beauty of a soaring raptor, and the fall hawk migration is reputed to be a great time to see them, and the various bald-top peaks of the greater Monadnock region are a terrific place to watch. You could do it on your own, of course, or join a group… press release follows:

The Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA) invites the public to join us for a free guided hike up Mt. Watatic this Sunday, September 13th, from 10:00 AM to Noon.  Al Futterman, NRWA Land Programs Director, and Don LeMay, Ashburnham Conservation Trust, will be your guides to Mt. Watatic’s 1,832-foot double summit.  You’ll have time to explore and enjoy incredible views of the Nashua River watershed—on a clear day, you’ll see Boston’s skyline to the south and Mt. Monadnock, the Wapacks, and even the White Mountains to the north.  We’ll watch for migrating hawks, as tens of thousands have been spotted from the summit over the past three decades.

This hike is part of a series of free programs, open to the public, which the Nashua River Watershed Association is offering in celebration of its 40th Anniversary.  Over the course of the year, NRWA will be presenting a program in each of our 32 communities; visit www.NashuaRiverWatershed.org for additional information.

Pre-registration is requested for this free guided hike.  This moderate hike is open to all ages.  The hike will take place rain or shine.  We ask that you please refrain from bringing dogs.  We do recommend that you bring drinking water and wear sturdy footwear.  To pre-register and receive directions, please contact Al Futterman, NRWA Land Programs and Outreach Director, at (978) 448-0299, or email AlF@NashuaRiverWatershed.org.  The NRWA is a non-profit environmental organization that depends on memberships for support.

Prisoners building trail in Berlin

Filed under trails by andrew wolfe

I don’t usually blog about things so far afield, but this one is too cool to pass it up. The northern branch of the NH state prison is putting inmates to work trail building in Berlin. BTW, did you know that the United States incarcerates a higher percentage of its population than any other nation on [...]

I like comments, even the inane and offensive ones that most of my news stories generate. It’s about the only feedback I get. Still, I have tired of fighting off the spam-bots who drop comments with links to promote their own commercial enterprises, so I have set this blog to require registration (at least, I [...]

National motocross races at Southwick

Filed under motorsport by andrew wolfe

I’ve been crazy about motorcycles for many years now, but I hadn’t been to a motocross race until this past weekend. Did you even know that one of the premiere events in the sport takes place in western Massachusetts, about two hours drive from Nashua?

You would think it would merit at least passing mention in [...]

NH considers closing state parks to save money

Filed under Uncategorized by andrew wolfe

State officials are still contemplating closing some state parks, on account of they can’t afford to keep running them under New Hampshire’s ridiculous system of making parks fend for themselves financially, my colleague Kevin Landrigan reports.
Words can not capture my contempt and dismay that they would seriously consider this proposal. It’s understandable if the state can’t [...]
