New Hampshire park officials continue trying to sort out their mandate to give the state something (parks) for nothing (no money), the Concord Monitor reports today.

Dirty secrets of the Clean Water Act

Posted by andrew wolfe

If you are in the habit of drinking water, you should care at least a bit about water quality, and I recommend a gander at the NY Times Toxic Waters series, which outlines how pollution violations have increased as the EPA and states have relaxed enforcement of the Clean Water Act. The NYT put together a searchable map, too, which suggests [...]

Comment?

Posted by andrew wolfe

I like comments, even the inane and offensive ones that most of my news stories generate. It’s about the only feedback I get. Still, I have tired of fighting off the spam-bots who drop comments with links to promote their own commercial enterprises, so I have set this blog to require registration (at least, I [...]

NH considers closing state parks to save money

Posted by andrew wolfe

State officials are still contemplating closing some state parks, on account of they can’t afford to keep running them under New Hampshire’s ridiculous system of making parks fend for themselves financially, my colleague Kevin Landrigan reports.
Words can not capture my contempt and dismay that they would seriously consider this proposal. It’s understandable if the state can’t [...]

Posted by andrew wolfe

Check out this week’s “Nashua Inside” for a brief article on the use of the Nashua River Rail Trail, and the City of Nashua’s bone-headed decision to lock up its parking lot and “close” its section of the trail at dusk (fortunately, most of the trail is in Massachusetts).

Bobcats attack, and anti-hunters do same

Posted by andrew wolfe

I had a fun story (if I do say so myself) on a guy who was jumped by a bobcat while turking hunting way out west in Mass. I was honestly surprised that it brought out all sorts of snide, anti-hunting comments. What’s up with that? This is NH, right?
I don’t hunt myself, but I should. [...]

4 wheel (expletive)

Posted by andrew wolfe

I’m not crazy about cars, but it’s tough to do without them come winter in New England.  I am writing now to rant about quads (four wheeled ATVS) and off road trucks. I enjoy riding off road myself (I’ll not say what, where or when), but I try to respect the terrain. If it’s posted, [...]

Ticked off about ticks

Posted by andrew wolfe

If you go outdoors often, you will occasionally find a tick crawling up your leg.

If you take your dog, you will occasionally find an army of ticks, crawling all over the place.

Some places seem lousier with ticks than others. I didn’t find a single one after Evan, Ben and I took a nice long walk [...]
