Prisoners building trail in Berlin

Posted by andrew wolfe

I don’t usually blog about things so far afield, but this one is too cool to pass it up. The northern branch of the NH state prison is putting inmates to work trail building in Berlin. BTW, did you know that the United States incarcerates a higher percentage of its population than any other nation on [...]

As I mentioned recently, I had come upon some ruins of the old settlement of Monson while exploring around the Granite Town Rail Trail. Last night, I revisited some other trails in the area, around Federal Hill in Hollis and Milford, and off the Monson Center site…

Getting around to Granite Town Rail Trail

Posted by andrew wolfe

Much as I enjoy hill climbing (and descents), sometimes I like to ride the rails, too. A recent note from reader Gerry Kemske reminded me that I still hadn’t visited the Granite Town Rail Trail, so I remedied that this last weekend. (See also this map).

For one, the field around the old dirt bike track is in glorious bloom, and better yet, the trail-smiths of the New England Mountain Bike Association have [...]

Hazeltine, trails so fine

Posted by andrew wolfe

Of all the local mountain bike trails, I think Hazeltine is my favorite (although I admit, more often than not, my favorite is whichever trail I am riding at the moment). The area off Austin Road in Amherst has terrific variety, from double-track to single track to where-did-the-trail-go track, loads of fun natural obstacles, and [...]

Trees on trails: ice storm clean up continues

Posted by andrew wolfe

There are still an awful lot of extra obstacles on an awful lot of trails as a result of last winter’s ice storm, and various groups will be getting together to do something about it.
This coming Sunday morning, a group from the Wilton Lyndeborough Winter Wanders snowmobile club will be working on the rail trail through [...]
