New trail race on Granite Town Rail Trail

Posted by andrew wolfe

The Brookline and Milford Conservation Commissions are hoping to raise a little walking around money by staging a trail race. You can get more info on the race on this fellow’s running blog (good luck with the VT 50, whoever you are!). The Ghost Train Trail Race on Oct. 25 will be 15 miles, out [...]

My first mountain bike race: I had a Bear Brook blast

Posted by andrew wolfe

My first mountain bike race did not start auspiciously.

I left the house about 15 minutes later than I’d intended, but that was no big deal. I’d still get there a good 40 minutes before the start, I figured.

About 20 minutes up the highway, I realized I hadn’t brought my inhaler.

That’s not good for a guy [...]

Mark, set, go

Posted by andrew wolfe

For those fortunate and fleet of foot who can still run (not me!), ‘tis the season to start signing up for races. There are more trail race series than ever, forcing folks to pick and choose.

The first race in the region that I could find comes up at the Middlesex Fells on March 28, to [...]

You’ll never break these heads of stone

Posted by andrew wolfe

I had forgotten, in my post surgical haze, to acknowledge this year’s Stoneheads. I did last year, after all, and as it happens, the same two trail runners extraordinaire have repeated.

Thomas Parker, 41, of Nashua, completed 20 races in the Western Mass. Athletic Club’s Grand Tree series, for a total of 1382 points. Way to [...]

Two races to go in new NH trail running series

Posted by andrew wolfe

There’s a new batch of trail races out in west-central New Hampshire, with two races yet to run this fall. The Western NH Trail Running Series has five races, all in the Dartmouth-Hanover-Lebanon region (up I-89, northwest of Concord). It also has a website, an impressive roster of sponsors and some 169 runners participating to [...]

Newer and nearer trail race series

Posted by andrew wolfe

The club that organizes the Grand Tree series doesn’t call itself Western Massachusetts Athletic Club for nothing. Now, some folks have rounded up a bunch of races around the eastern end of central New England: the Eastern New England Trail Races Series.

They’ve put together a calendar of 20 races, a few of which are shared with [...]

2008 GT schedule

Posted by andrew wolfe

In some small ways, I’m glad I can no longer run in the Grand Tree series. (I won’t say compete; I was more of a mid-pack guy).
I miss trail running something awful, but this year’s GT schedule looks brutal; they’ve added another near-marathon length race on one of the tougher trails around… the (third annual) MorFun Wapack [...]

A kinder, gentler trail marathon

Posted by andrew wolfe

Though I won’t be running it myself (see post below), I can recommend the Stone Cat 50 and marathon to anyone who’s up for it.

Stone Cat proved to be one of the most fun trail races I did last year (Disclosure: I only did three last year, and they were all a lot of fun).
This year’s [...]

Rich Busa

Posted by andrew wolfe

In case anyone missed it, the profile of trail runner extraordinaire Rich Busa ran today (Saturday). Here ’tis: http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071027/NEWS01/310270090/-1/news
UPDATE:
Two minor corrections: We can all wish Rich a happy 78th birthday Oct. 30, but he was still 77 when the article was published on Oct. 27. Also, he is no longer the oldest guy to finish [...]

7.6 miles, all uphill

Posted by andrew wolfe

Just a reminder, folks… the lottery for the Mount Washington Road Race runs from March 1 through the 15.
I have no idea what the odds are, nor what it would be like to run uphill for that distance… it would be interesting to find out…
UPDATE 2/28 -I haven't decided whether to enter the lottery, myself. If [...]
