Little Ben

Ben and I made a deal Saturday, the first night he came home with us from the Humane Society. He’d pipe down, and I’d let him sleep on my bed. It worked surprisingly well. He even late me sleep late, not counting a 2 a.m. potty expedition.
Ben’s a southerner, like most of the rescued dogs available for adoption here in New England, so some cultural differences are to be expected. For instance, I chose shoes to keep my feet warm and dry. He chews shoes. We have similar differences of opinion about gloves, and the edibility of used Kleenex. He managed to leave Alabama without acquiring all the vaunted manners of a southern gentleman, but he seems willing to work on it. He had already started to get the hang of housetraining. Now we just need to persuade him that the basement is also part of the house.
We’re told Ben is part border collie, and he’s just shy of a year old, both of which are enough to account for being more than a handful. His first full day at home included four walks, a few hours of fetch and another trip to the pet store in hope of finding something he could chew without demolishing and ingesting it. It worked; he managed to tire us out. Strange, though, it turns out beds are another point of disagreement. He doesn’t much care for them.
