Political action

Posted by andrew wolfe

To arms! Two feet! 2 change!
The NH Sierra Club plans an Earth Day rally and petition drive to support more rational energy policies (as opposed to our current collective head in the sand approach). They promise more info online here.
Better still, they’ve planned a bunch of parties to kick off the whole campaign, Power 2 Change.
In Nashua, [...]

Armchair AT hiking

Posted by andrew wolfe

Ah, spring, and an old man’s thoughts turn… well, let’s not go there.
It’s actually too late to be thinking about planning a through hike of the AT this spring, but you can get a taste of what you’d be getting into this Thursday (April 3), as Carl Olsen of Milford, a section (serial) hiker himself, is [...]

Memorial scholarship ride in Hollis

Posted by andrew wolfe

When I get on my bicycle, I always head west. Bicycling is better that way. The countryside gets scenic as soon as you cross Nashua city lines, and the further west you ride, the fewer cars you encounter (excepting Route 101A, of course).

Bicyclists can roll and revel in the bucolic Hollis back roads and raise money [...]

For the record, NH has caves

Posted by andrew wolfe

I stand gently but authoritatively corrected. New Hampshire has caves, according to Ernst Kastning, a speleologist with the New Hampshire Geological Survey.

In the interest of full, technical accuracy, I am actually sitting down as I write. "Stand corrected" is a figure of speech. Similarly, I know that bats don’t make or use nests.  I just thought [...]

Bad news on bats and bugbites

Posted by andrew wolfe

Just as mosquito-borne diseases such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis and Nile Fever seem to be increasing, a mysterious new disease threatens the region’s bat population.

The federal Fish and Game Service has posted a website with information on the disease, and is accepting donations to fund further study.
Bats are cute little critters, but even if they give [...]

Antrim slalom goes big

The third annual ‘Race for the Old Gold Jug’ in Antrim will be an officially-sanctioned International Skateboard Slalom Association race, organizers announced today.Having been to the first and second, I can attest that this event is a blast for participants and spectators alike (see previous posts or the article advancing last year’s race). I don’t doubt that [...]

How to get the guide

Posted by andrew wolfe

The aforementioned Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsage Greenway trail guide is out and available locally at Toadstool Books in Milford, or by mail order, the SRKG Coalition announced today.

The Supapee-Ragged-Kearsage Greenway is a network of trails in the area described by those peaks; you can learn more about it on the group’s website. The guide includes handy information such [...]

2008 GT schedule

Posted by andrew wolfe

In some small ways, I’m glad I can no longer run in the Grand Tree series. (I won’t say compete; I was more of a mid-pack guy).
I miss trail running something awful, but this year’s GT schedule looks brutal; they’ve added another near-marathon length race on one of the tougher trails around… the (third annual) MorFun Wapack [...]

Yummy snow

Posted by andrew wolfe

I saw news on Friday of a study on bacteria in snow, but didn’t get around to checking it out until this morning. It’s a matter of some concern to any outdoor athlete.
I carry my own water, most times, but I’ve also used snow to quench a thirst. I like to sip snow from the higher boughs [...]
