Temple Mountain Ski Area may be long gone, but the mountain hasn’t moved.
I have fond memories of skiing Temple Mountain back in the day, including the first time I ever tried snowboarding… using an old G&S plank that weighed about 30 pounds. I fell over backwards while trying to strap on the bindings, and broke [...]
There’s this guy up in Franklin who makes recumbent quad-cycles for riding on otherwise unused railroad lines (don’t try that on the Amtrack lines, or even Guilford). I gather there is one such 11-mile line up in the Wolfboro area. He also makes a pretty cool pea shooter.
Maps are good. Trail guides are even better.
If the guide is done well, it’s like having a professional guide in your pocket.
You can already buy trail guides for a bunch of cool local trails (Wapack, and Monadnock-Sunapee to name two). EMS usually stocks them, and I get the better local bookstores do too. Soon, we [...]

That’s true of most cities, I suppose, but I was sorry to hear that the city proposes to let developers put up a business and industrial park on 400 acres of [...]
Until recently, I would have gone out for good long run to ruminate and triumph over inertia and other such sufferings… the sort that are easier to understand and overcome.
Alas, runs are no longer an option for me (that was part of the bad news), so I [...]
I’m kind of lazy. I could have gotten up earlier this morning, and headed up north to hike, but I didn’t feel like driving that far. So, I set out for Monadnock again, having planned a nice long and largely new-to-me route.
I started out from the state park HQ, and headed up the Cascade Link [...]
More, please.
I don’t remember the blizzard of ‘78. I’m sure I would, but I didn’t live in these parts at that time.
For me, the blizzard of ‘74 was the Big One. I was ten years old, and my memories turn out to be a bit sketchy. A bit of research tells me that it was only 19 inches [...]
