Terrain and trees

As mentioned a while ago, I’d never checked out the Joe English land or the Peabody Mill Environmental Center. I recently rectified that.

I took my folks there for a short hike over Thanksgiving weekend. I can’t say we fully explored it, but I liked what I saw. The land has a more rugged, wild look to it than most of the local landscape… it’s an area sculpted by glaciers, and the woods through which we walked were way too rocky to have ever been plowed. Logged, for sure, and maybe grazed, but not sowed. There was a nice mix of relatively mature hard and softwood trees, and the brooks (Hammond, Joe English and perhaps others?) are gorgeous (pun intended). I also enjoyed popping into the PMEC for a peek at the stuffed menagerie. I look forward to going back, and to checking out some of their programs sometime.

I also went for a walk recently in the Horse Hill area… the first time I’d visited on foot. Whizzing through by bicycle, I hadn’t noticed how recently the land must have been clear cut. The car-cass and other remnants of misuse (old tires, mostly) also had escaped my notice… The area is certainly better off now, and here’s hoping those saplings will be allowed to grow ancient.
