beat the bonk

Posted by andrew wolfe

If you're going to go out and run for over an hour, you might want to carry a little extra fuel.
I don't know how much is enough, or too much. I'm still learning. I can say with confidence that it's best to eat something before you start to feel faint : ) I also have found that the [...]

7 Sisters, 12 miles, 3,700 feet

Posted by andrew wolfe

Short of running it yourself, the best way to gauge how tough a course will be is to check the results of past year's races.

The next race on my calander is 7 Sisters, out west in Amherst, Mass., and past year's results suggest that it will live up to its billing as a tough one.
The race website says as [...]

Maison du Mud

Posted by andrew wolfe

We've all heard that the Inuit have dozens of different words for snow. I have no idea whether that's true, but it sounds right. So how come New Englanders have only one word for mud?
Having run what many folks said was the muddiest Muddy Moose in memory, I can attest that there are many varieties, and [...]

100 muddy miles

Posted by andrew wolfe

Cheers again to "Sherpa" John Lacroix, a NH seacoast area high school teacher who just completed his first 100-mile run last weekend!

John has signed up for at least two other 100 milers this season, but more immediately he says he'll be there at Muddy Moose. Should be a breeze in comparison.

Muddiest Moose?

Posted by andrew wolfe

It's raining, it's pouring and up north it's snowing.
The Muddy Moose is coming right on up Sunday, and race director Fergus Cullen writes:
"Yes, it is snowing in Wolfeboro right now, but I don't think we'll need to add snowshoe divisions. Considerable rain is expected this week which will probably a) melt the snow and b) [...]

I am not worthy

Posted by andrew wolfe

I am grateful to the sports guys for running bits from my blog on Sundays, but I was mortified to see that they'd included my finish time at the bottom of a list of the 15 top finishers from a recent race.

The information was correct; they reported the names and times of the top 15 finishers, and [...]

Merrimack River Trail Race report

Posted by andrew wolfe

The Merrimack River Trail Race is a fast course. I'd heard as much, and it's no lie. I wish I were as fast as that course.
Results are up here.
The MRTR is a well-established race - this was the 16th annual - and it's part of a couple different series, so it draws a decent crowd.
The race [...]

Mo’ Fun Wapack Race

Posted by andrew wolfe

Bogie's MorFun Wapack Trail race got a professional PR boost, courtesy of the Wapack Wilderness Campaign.
I wrote about the Wapack Trail races quite a while back, and also about my own forays along the trail… here, here and here.
I'd never heard of the Wapack Wilderness, though, and I'm glad to know that it's there. We got a [...]
