happy trails to you

Posted by andrew wolfe

I don’t get out to Beaver Brook often enough to tire of it, but a change of scenery can be nice all the same.
A friend introduced me to an alternative trail system just down the road a bit in Carlisle, Mass.
The Great Brook Farm State Park is, as the name suggests, part of the Massachusetts state [...]

going downhill fast

Posted by andrew wolfe

This winter got off to such a late start, I never was inspired to get out snowboarding. Now that spring's here, tho, I'm looking forward to breaking out the skateboards.

I've just signed up for what will be my first race, the Needham Open, in Needham, Mass, on May 19.
I recommend it to anyone and everyone; it costs [...]

Nipmuck Trail Marathon application

Posted by andrew wolfe

I've yet to run Nipmuck, but my dear friend Michelle assures me that it's both a blast and brutal.
The course has two legs, each out-and-back, and the second includes a long hill. Nipmuck Dave was good enough to allow me to put the 2007 Nipmuck Trail Marathon application up online, so here 'tis, and here is [...]

Spring uncoils

Posted by andrew wolfe

Here's hoping for a fast and full thaw. As of Saturday evening, the trails in Mine Falls Park were wretched ribbons of hard, lumpy ice, coated with a slick drool of melt.

I'll run on most anything, but I didn't enjoy that stuff much. I'm loving the extra daylight, though. I hit MFP for a little extra workout [...]

new shoes

Posted by andrew wolfe

My first pair of trail running shoes are about ready for retirement, soon to become my coolest pair of knockabout leisure shoes.
I love my Salomon XA 3D Pros. Despite the ungainly name, they are one sweet, swift set of sneaks. They carried me through the Greylock and Stone Cat marathons, the Presi Traverse and plenty [...]

off the wall, literally

Posted by andrew wolfe

I was just surfing around and came up the topic of parkour, and free running. I was vaguely aware that such a thing existed, but not that it had already evolved into two distinct schools…

This video shows Parkour founder David Belle in action, and it's ruddy amazing. Hang in there past the posing in the [...]

grand plans

Posted by andrew wolfe

I’ve been signing up for races, and thinking about the coming season. I figure if I write it all down, it may help to motivate me…

My most immediate goal is to get rid of the nagging muscle strains that have plagued me since sometime late last year. I’ve been stretching like crazy, and doing all [...]

flinging mud

Posted by andrew wolfe

What is it about mud? New Hampshire has a great tradition of football in the mud, and the Muddy Moose may be the messiest trail race around.
Race director Fergus Cullen has updated the race web site, and online registration is up and running. There's a 14 mile course and a four mile course. As Cullen writes, "two [...]

power foods

Posted by andrew wolfe

Serious runners tend to view food as fuel, and have all sorts of theories as to which foods "work" best for converting calories to energy. Not me.
So far as I'm concerned, the best thing about running a lot is that you can eat darn near anything, and as much as you want… within reason. I [...]

snowshoe marathon and ultra

Posted by andrew wolfe

Sherpa John wrote a nice report on the snowshoe marathon he helped to organize this past weekend in Pittsfield Vt. My own snowshoe outing pales in comparison! There's also an ultra planned in the same area this summer, he writes.

John writes on Cool Running that he guarantees the 40 to 50 mile ultra course will be [...]
