The Big Rivers

Posted by andrew wolfe

The Nashua is an easy-going river, popular with bass fishermen as well as paddlers.
It’s not exactly wilderness, but I’ve seen mink, osprey, beaver and otter along it, not to mention herons and turtles.
You can paddle on the Nashua any time of year, at least until it freezes over. The Nashua runs slow, and it can [...]

Nissitissit River

Posted by andrew wolfe

The Nissitissit River runs southeast from Lake Potanipo in Brookline, and flows into the Nashua River.
There’s a lovely little swimming hole at Bohannon’s Bridge in Brookline, which might also make a good spot to put in a canoe or kayak, though I’ve not tried it.
The Nissitissit looks and smells to be the cleanest of all our [...]

Salmon Brook

Posted by andrew wolfe

Looking at a map or walking around town, one might guess that the City of Nashua sprouted on the banks of the Nashua River.
While the Nashua River powered the big mills, it was Salmon Brook that first brought white folk to the neighborhood (then part of Dunstable, Massachusetts). Back then the brook was full of fish, fit [...]

College Club concert

We sounded pretty good, if I do say so myself. And I do.
Furthermore, we all had a blast. The Schaffer family of Litchfield were kind enough to share some photos they took during the show.

signs of spring

Posted by andrew wolfe

Flowers? Buds on trees? Na. I know it's spring because I was able to ride to work today.
I never really put my bike away for the winter, but it's been a while since I took the Triumph out… probably since January (remember those 60 and 70 degree days?). I don't recall riding at all in [...]

licensed to heal

The Portsmouth Herald reports that the New Hampshire state legislature is considering whether the state should license massage therapists.
There are all sorts of professions and trades that go unregulated in New Hampshire, but health care providers shouldn't be among them. The trick is to parse proven therapies from the New Age faith-based practices. To show support for the [...]

Race called for snow

Posted by andrew wolfe

Nashua has lost the distinction of hosting the first trail race of the season, as 3C Productions Race Director Michael Amarello has postponed this Saturday's 5k in Mine Falls Park.
Michael was good enough to offer several different options for rain checks. Here's his e-mail:

To Luv2Run Nashua 5K Registrants:
Due to the recent snow storm, the trails [...]

resistance is not futile

Posted by andrew wolfe

Remember that trick where you stand in a doorway, put your arms at your sides and then press against the frame with all your might for a minute?
Afterwards, your arms sort of float up by themselves… I guess I've always been easily amused… Anyhow, it turns out that running in deep snow has the same [...]

Trotting in Temple

Posted by andrew wolfe

I just got word of another local race coming up. The third annual Temple Half Marathon is set for April 28.
It's a road race, and should be a pleasant course… Temple is a beautiful town, and the elevation doesn't sound so lofty by trail race standards. Seven Sisters has 3,700 feet over 12 miles; Northern Nipmuck [...]

getting air

Steve and I have been rehearsing for his upcoming show March 25 at Nashua High South, and we did a live spot on WERS's "The Playground" last Sunday to promote it.

I haven't been on the radio since I was at Macalester College, spinning records in the wee hours in St. Paul, MN, on a station with a broadcast range of [...]
