NASA has cleared astronaut Suni Williams for a 10 a.m. starting time Monday, as she runs a virtual Boston Marathon while lapping the planet on the International Space Station!

Going long part III

I put two more marathons under my feet that fall. I’m stronger now than I was in the spring, but 4:15 remains my best time. That’s Michelle’s doing.
Michelle is a wise and angelically beautiful woman who would sock me in the shoulder if I presumed to call her my girlfriend. Maybe some day, if I’m very lucky. She’s also a devoted trail runner and all-season outdoorswoman, and her enthusiasm rubs off in all the right ways.

One overcast Sunday in March, I parked my car in the mill yard, at the edge of Mine Falls Park. The main trails, wide and flat, form a five-mile circuit, like the numeral eight turned sideways and stepped on. I gave Clover a drink and left her in the car after the second loop.

Going long

Though he lives just down my street, I met Steve while running at our local park.
We’d both brought our dogs along, and we struck up a conversation while they got acquainted in the usual canine custom. We had age and geography in common, and similar tastes in beer and music. That’s plenty for guys to bond.
Running made us closer friends, and Steve’s encouragement made me a better runner, but we don’t run together as often anymore.
