We have a winner!Andrew | 07 August, 2007 11:30 | (177)
Congratulations to Ken Miles of Nashua, winner of the first-ever Trail Treasure contest! Ken won a $50 gift card at Eastern Mountain Sports, courtesy of The Telegraph. We got 26 entries for the first contest, which involved finding the "treasure chest" (a plasticware bin) hidden under a rock in an old granite quarry in the Arched Bridge Conservation Area in Dunstable, Mass. To my eye, it looks typical of an early 19th century quarry, from which people used hand-held drills, wedges and sledge hammers to carve granite blocks from hillsides... there is a much more modern quarry just the other side of the hill, however, so who knows? According to Maurice Roy of Nashua, "The place was part of the quarry over the hill to cut granite many years ago. The quarry was known as "Packy Winn's Quarry." Packy directed traffic on Main St. with all the comic signals one can imagine." The next contest will begin Thursday, and will feature two drawings, for $50 and $25 gift certificates at Goodale's Bike Shop in Nashua. Stay tuned to The Telegraph (print or online) for details. Ken picked up his prize Wednesday, and was a good enough sport to let us snap a picture:
