When I was a kid, I once tried to make my own ice sailboard. I took my Snurfboard (“snow + surf” board, a precursor to the snowboard, though they were all but unrideable in anything but powder), screwed a bungee cord across the deck for a binding, got an old bed sheet and a couple broomsticks, took it all out on Lake Contoocook on a windy winter day, and got bored and cold. Even with a stiff wind at my back, I was going nowhere. I clung fast to the idea, though. I imagined power kiting before I’d heard people were actually doing it, and now I see there’s a product that actually accomplishes what I was trying to do: the kite wing. It’s like the sail from a sailboard, and it looks like a hoot. It’s a ways out of my price range, but I’ll be watching for one to come along used. Add commentAbout Mesearcharchives
