Stephen fires first mortar at Bradley

CONCORD [-] Republican congressional candidate John Stephen fires the first attack ad on television of the First District primary on the spending and energy policies of former Congressman Jeb Bradley.

The 30-second, TV commercial begins airing Tuesday on WMUR and New Hampshire cable channels.

In it, Stephen claims Bradley supported $100 billion in wasteful spending and voted five times against more drilling for more domestic oil and gas production.   “Jeb Bradley. He’s everything that’s wrong in Congress,’’ the Stephen ad concludes.

Earlier this week, Bradley had begun a radio commercial attacking Stephen as a reckless, free spender while Stephen was commissioner of  Health and Human Services.

In a statement, Stephen said this is the proper time to draw a contrast with Bradley who won his first primary by defeating Stephen and six others in 2002.

"There is a significant difference in my record and Jeb Bradley’s on the issues most important to the public, wasteful spending and energy independence,’’ Stephen said.   “The people want change in Washington and this ad shows that I am the candidate with the record for delivering change."

Bradley lost his seat in 2006 to Democrat Carol Shea-Porter.

Stephen claimed in his ad that while serving as commissioner, he saved state taxpayers $143 million.

Last week, Bradley charged one of Stephen’s reforms to change the county and state share of spending on services for senior citizens has led to higher local property taxes.  This attack is referred to in Bradley’s latest radio spot.

The two will face one another in a Manchester Republican City Committee forum Wednesday night.
