Hillary rings robocall alarm

KevinLandrigan | 06 January, 2008 22:44 | (209)

The Hillary Rodham Clinton campaign charged Barack Obama's campaign may have violated with an automatic telephone call made to members who were on the Do Not Call List.

This 11th hour offensive underscores Clinton's desire to tarnish Obama as a change agent to a new form of politics.

Clinton's camp likened the calls to ones the Republican Party used against then-Democratic congressional candidate Paul Hodes who has since endorsed Obama.

State law does not allow these calls to be made to those on the Do Not Call List.

In a technical charge, they claim 38 seconds go by before the caller identifies the Obama campaign as the source. State law requires that identification come within the first 30 seconds.

The Clinton campaign provided this transcript which corresponds to an audio recording of the call.

``Hi this is Wendy Frosh, chair of the board of Planned
Parenthood in Northern New England. As people have begun to rally around Barack
Obama’s call for change, the (inaudible) attacks have begun. He was a (inaudible) activist in reproductive rights for more than 20 years, I know the facts.

``Barack has a 100% pro-choice record and has always been a champion for women’s rights. Hillary Clinton’s last minute smears won’t protect the right to choose. But as president, Barack Obama will. Please join me in supporting Barack Obama this
Tuesday. Thank you. Paid for by Obama for America."

Obama Co-Chair Ned Helms said there had been no intent to call someone on the Do Not Call List and the campaign will alert the vendor.

"Every hour since Hillary Clinton lost in Iowa, her attacks have become more and
more desperate.  This call was in direct response to one of many 11th-hour false
attacks Clinton has made at the end of the New Hampshire campaign,'' Helms said.

Now here's why the call was made. The Clinton campaign did a tough mailing that criticized Obama's failure to vote on several abortion rights measures as an Illinois state senator.

On more than 100 occasions during his six years in Springfield, Obama invoked the legal device of voting ``present'' rather than for or against a pending bill.
