Edwards rebuts Obama on troop withdrawal voteKevinLandrigan | 02 April, 2007 14:56 | (688)
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards appeared to rebut primary rival Barack Obama Monday, calling on Congress to resist President Bush on the war in Iraq even if Bush as promised vetoes a date for withdrawal of American troops. "This is not a time for timidity from Congress. This is a time for leadership and strength," Edwards said at the opening of a town hall-style forum at Concord High School Monday. "The Congress should make absolutely clear they are going to stand by what they passed." Obama told Associated Press on Sunday the Congress should pass the war funding money without a timeline for withdrawal if Bush vetoed the spending bill.
"Leadership and strength?" Is following the crowd when you know that the crowd is going the wrong direction leadership? Or is it craven pandering to gain the votes of the looney division of the Democratic party? Using the war funding bill to press for a bugout is the most unleadership thing imaginiable. If Edwards really feels in his heart that we should just pull out then he should promote an end to funding. That would show some leadership, but he will not do that. The only candidate showing clear leadership is John McCain (not my guy). Whether you agree with him or not you have to respect his leadership on this issue. He has taken a principled position, the politics be damned. That is leadership and courage. Posted by: John Bachman | April 14, 2007, 08:44
everytime i hear john bachman's argument, i notice it is such an obvious republican ploy to get democrats to stop funding and hurt our men and women overseas. republicans are in it to win it, regardless of the harm they do to our troops and our society. cutting funding without changing policy is like combining the WORST anti-war ideas with the WORST pro-war ideas. funding without a timeline for withdrawal is a way to keep the discussion alive while we change policy. the current obama plan is to fund just enough to keep the troops safe till the president can be overridden by congress. sounds good to me.
