I finally found him! Mr. Gothic Tinkerbell!

Teresa | 14 January, 2008 12:08 | (278)

It's funny the way things can turn up once you've given up on them. You may recall this post from a year and a half ago in which I opted to snuggle down in my hotel room and watch Japanese television instead of dragging my exhausted body through Xian's Muslim Quarter.

As the title of this post suggests, after all this time, I stumbled across a clip from the Japanese variety show I watched that night. So now, I can finally share with you that very special mixture of confusion, jealousy, and elation I experienced that night in Xian.

Filling in the blanks

Just tying up a few loose ends and filling in a few blanks, including the one picture that pretty much summarizes my entire trip.

Still finding surprises

Teresa | 24 October, 2006 09:45 | (394)

In retrospect, knowing how to read Chinese would've been extremely helpful when I picked up those video CDs in Tibet. Because now there are Russian men in suspenders dancing on an airplane wing on my computer screen, and I'm not quite sure how this happened.

Reunited, and it feels so good

Teresa | 05 October, 2006 12:18 | (526)

This Sunday, we had our reunion party - we're talking eight kinds of salad, little deli sandwiches, and picture slideshows. We also watched a video about the destination for the chorus' next tour in 2008. Uh, apparently there are topless beaches.

How low can you go?

Teresa | 02 August, 2006 12:24 | (2073)

I suppose you could also call this Teresa's Guide to Chinese Bathroom Awareness, but that sounds too much like a religious book. I definitely did a lot of praying before walking into some of these bathrooms, though. If there are no atheists in a fox hole, there aren't any atheists in the bathroom line at a Chinese gas station, either.

A summary of sorts

In the words of Inigo Montoya from the film The Princess Bride, "Let me explain. No, there is no time. Let me sum up."

Chengdu is a black hole and One Day in Shanghai

Teresa | 18 July, 2006 23:43 | (789)

Never fly into (or out of) Chengdu if you can help it. The city is located in a basin and is very susceptible to bad weather, as was the case when we flew from Chengdu to Tibet and then from Tibet back to Chengdu.

New style Tibetan boyfriend

Teresa | 16 July, 2006 22:38 | (872)

Before I left, everyone told me not to get involved with any guys while I was in China. This is Tibet, though, which is part of China, but is also very culturally different from China, so I figured I could bend the rules a little bit. Trust me, if you had been there, you wouldn’t have been able to resist his advances either. Here’s his picture.

Be careful what you wish for

You know how I said I wished I had taken a picture of that traditional Tibetan toilet?

Trench warfare

A word of advice to those using a traditional Tibetan toilet for the first time. Never take the first stall, if there is a stall. If there is no stall, do not stand at the lower end of the trench. Gravity works very well in Tibet and everything runs downstream.

Karaoke business meeting

Teresa | 10 July, 2006 23:50 | (594)

I had heard that in Japan, businessmen will sometimes conduct meetings at a karaoke club - perhaps you can gauge how many risks your potential business partner is willing to take by the number of times he steps up to the microphone - but I didn't know they did it in China, too.

Dead (wo)man walking

Teresa | 09 July, 2006 22:23 | (766)

If someone is buried with an army the size of this one, it's safe to say they probably made a lot of enemies during their life and are concerned that said enemies might be waiting for them in the afterlife.

Fun on the train

Teresa | 07 July, 2006 21:23 | (1018)

In six and a half hours, you could fly from Boston to San Francisco. Or you could take a train from Luoyang to Xian. A six and a half hour train ride isn't too bad, unless it's supposed to be five hours.
