Hollis petitions up in three sports

Hollis/Brookline High School athletic director Rhon Rupp confirmed Tuesday that his school was petitioning up in three girls sports for the 2010-2011 school year.

Pending the approval of individual New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association sports committees, the Cavaliers would like to play in Division I in girls soccer, girls volleyball and girls lacrosse.

Hollis/Brookline is traditionally strong in all three sports and is looking forward to taking on the challenge of competiting against the state’s largest schools.

“Eight years ago we went from Class M to Class I and some people wondered how competitive we’d be,” Rupp said. “I think the athletes in all three sports are looking forward to and will prepare for this next challenge.”

Beginning next year, New Hampshire will do away with Class L, I, M and S classifications and go to a divisional breakdown in each sport, allowing schools to pick and chose what sports they can move up in.

Rupp said the decision would be evaluated in two years when the school would have the option of returning to the division, based on enrollment, in which they are placed by the NHIAA.

    I'm not sure the NHIAA has planned this out well.

    What if a team moves up to Class L/D1 for soccer and no one moves down? Then you have an odd # of teams and every team can not be scheduled to play every Tuesday and Friday. Do you add additional games during the week to get every team the same # of games for the season? The season can not reasonably be extended considering the championships will end on 11-8 this year.

    What if a Class L/D1 girls team moves down and the boys stay up? Right now the scheduling is easy with one team at home and one team away on the same day. A change for one gender team could increase travel costs. Also, what about freshman soccer where the boys and girls travel together? If one team is in another class/division it throws off the schedule and increases travel costs. It will be interesting to see how the NHIAA will deal w/ scheduling for an odd # of teams in a soccer division. It will be very interesting to see how various schools will decide to handle travel costs that may increase.

    Hollis Brookline girls soccer, volleyball and lacrosse will have a real wake-up call if they petition up. Volleyball may be very competitive, they are at the top of the class every year and have won a number of championships. But soccer and lacrosse...well I don't think the "Rupper" gets it...it's a whole heck of a lot faster in class L....they will be able to compete...but they will be far from the elite...so much so that I'd be very surprised if they finished in the top third or even half of the league...Good luck...
