Like father, like son

Leave it to Souhegan High School baseball coach and recently retired athletic director Bill Dod to come up with another way of getting the word out about high school sports. He’s the driving force behind a weekly Class I baseball newsletter.

What caught my eye was the name and home town of this week’s Player of the Week, Jake Woodward of Lebanon High School. All Woodward did last week was go 7-for-12, with a home run, a triple and a double. He scored five runs, knocked in five and stole three bases.

More remarkable was his work on the mound, where his fourth shutout in five starts included 16 strikeouts. Remember, they only play seven innings in high school, so that’s 16 of a possible 21 outs. He’s 5-0 on the mound so far this spring and he is just a junior.

And according to Dod, Woodward is, indeed, the son of former Lebanon standout Rob Woodward, who pitched in the Major Leagues, including four stints with the Red Sox between 1985 and 1988.
