Home teams dominate

Yes, there were some big upsets, most of them coming, predictably enough, in the preliminary round. But the NHIAA’s cost cutting idea to play quarterfinal basketball games at the home of the higher seed resulted in the home teams winning 84 percent of those games.
Of course, nobody would have predicted that 12th seeded Alvirne would actually host a quarterfinal game. But the Broncos did and held serve with a victory over No. 13 Londonderry, meaning home teams were a perfect 4-0 in Class L quarterfinals.
The only home team to lose in Class M boys quarterfinal action was Campbell, which dropped a two-point decision to Mascoma Valley Regional of West Canaan.
The only division in which visitors held their own was in Class S girls, where visitors went 2-2 in the quarterfinals. It makes sense because Class S schedules vary in strength more than any other division.
There were great crowds for quarterfinal games. The Pembroke-Milford boys game comes to mind, and there were capacity or near capacity crowds at Salem, Alvirne, Memorial and Trinity on Saturday night.
But the fact that prospective fans were turned away from Trinity and Conant in Jaffrey because of their small seating capacities adds to the argument to return tournament basketball quarterfinal games to neutral sites.
Home teams were 54-10 in preliminary round games and had the same winning percentage in the quarterfinals where home teams went 27-5.
