The 43-foot pitching rubber in softball

Posted by gary fitz

How much of an impact would it be to move the softball pitching rubber back three feet – to the college distance of 43 feet – in New Hampshire.
Florida instituted the change three years ago and Massachusetts went back to 43-feet last spring.  The NHIAA considered the change in the off-season, then decided to stay at 40 feet.

NHIAA softball back at Memorial Field

Posted by gary fitz

Every year high school softball coaches in Class I and Class L say the same thing. Memorial Field in Concord is not a women’s softball venue, it’s a men’s slow pitch softball field.
With it’s distant fences and the physical impossibility of a high school girls actually hitting it over those fences, potential home runs at other field [...]

Some final thoughts

Posted by gary fitz

It was set up perfectly. Two Manchester rivals in the finals, with all kinds of inter-connectiing stories, the best being the coach of one team (Memorial’s Mike Fitzpatrick) trying to defend the spectacular long range shooting of his son (Trinity’s Cormac Fitzpatrick).

Home teams dominate

Posted by gary fitz

Yes, there were some big upsets, most of them coming, predictably enough, in the preliminary round. But the NHIAA’s cost cutting idea to play quarterfinal basketball games at the home of the higher seed resulted in the home teams winning 84 percent of those games.

Then on Wednesday night in the boys L prelims, a pair of bracket busting stunners, as No. 12 Alvirne beat No. 5 Pinkerton Academy [...]

Welcome to tiebreak heaven

Posted by gary fitz

Some ties are easier to break than others, so you have to love the four-way tie for sixth at 11-7 in the final Class L boys basketball standing. That is, unless you’re Nashua South.
Of the four team, the Panthers will be the only ones hitting the road on Wednesday for the opening round of the [...]

Tomahawks iced

Posted by gary fitz

In a tough development for the ongoing growth of the Merrimack High School boys ice hockey program, the Tomahawks once again will be on the outside looking in as the Division II tournament starts next weekend.
What happened? After beating Kingswood back on Feb. 9, the ‘Hawks looked like they were on their way. That gave [...]
