Pretty hot on D-III ice

It’s a division that’s been ruled by one team, Souhegan, over the last three years.
But if you want to see a true wide open competition, check out Division III boys hockey. There’s not much that separates the top teams, if anything. Any one of five or six — Souhegan, Bedford, Kennett, Somersworth, even Pembroke — which beat Souhegan last weekend — or Hollis/Brookline could win it.
Actually, there are two thinly veiled groups - Somersworth, Souhegan and Bedford all with three losses, and Pembroke, Kennett and HB with four. But remember, it’s an eight team tournament this year, and some good teams are going to be left out of the semifinals.
“All the teams have a good chance,” Cavs coach Tim Clark said. “It’s whoever’s hot, whoever’s not. It’s going to be a very interesting tournament…
One preview will be a rare Friday night game at 7 at Conway Arena between the Sabers and Bedford, who stunned Souhegan in the season opener. It should be a tremendous pre-tourney party.
Likewise, there’s a good one on tap Wednesday at 4:30 at the Ice Den in Hooksett between now once-beaten Bishop Guertin and top four contender Pinkerton Academy. The Cards ran into some hot goaltending in their 1-0 loss vs. an up-and-coming St. Thomas team last Saturday, and will face some good goaltending, be it the Astros’ JJ Solloway or Kevin Kent. Kent recorded a recent shutout of Exeter, but Solloway appears to be the main man in net for the Astros. It will be interesting to see how BG responds to its first Division I in-state loss of the year.
