Cuts coming elsewhere

Filed under Uncategorized by gary fitz at 1:37 pm

While Nashua wrestled with potential cuts to middle school sports, high schools in New York are cutting back on games to save money.

Baseball teams that normally play 24 games will play 20. Football team that schedule 10 games will be cut to nine or eight.

Class I athletic directors in New Hampshire voted last year to shorten their baseball and softball schedules this spring, even putting limits on the ammount of pre-season scrimmages each team can play.

Mississippi has cut all schedules by 10 percent, with the notable exception of football. Maine recently voted down a measure to decrease schedules, but put rules in place that allows fewer teams to qualify for post-season play.

The latter is a rule long overdue in New Hampshire, where 80 percent or more teams qualify for some tournaments. The 18-game Class L boys and girls seasons eliminiates just four of 20 teams from the post season.
