Post recession wish list

Here are a few things I’d like to see happen when the economy improves:

1. Shot clocks in high school basketball. Teams should be rewarded for good defense. Fouling shouldn’t be the only way to get the ball back in the final minutes of a close game, etc. etc.

2. Sixteen minute halves, rather than eight-minute quarters in basketball. Let the game flow without the artificial stoppages. To compensate, give each coach one extra timeout.

3. A return to balanced scheduling whenever possible. There are 20 teams currently in Class L, why not let everyone play everyone else once. That’s 19 games instead of 18, what’s the big deal? It’s dumb that the two teams who met in the last two finals, Salem and Trinity, don’t meet during the regular season. And what if Keene sneaks into the boys’ tournament with two wins over weak, Class I, Con-Val of Peterborough? Keene is currently 2-5, with both wins over 0-9 Con-Val.

4. Return to neutral sites for quarterfinal basketball games. The Class I and Class L tournaments should be great this year, because of the balance. It’s too bad the quarterfinal rounds in all divisions will be played at the home of the higher seeds, and all at the same time, making it impossible to watch more than one game.
