BG is on the move

Posted by gary fitz

Dave Haley’s bi-weekly boys basketball power rankings are out on NH Sports Page, and the biggest mover is Bishop Guertin.
The Cardinals, unranked two weeks ago, surged all the way to the seventh spot, coming off big wins at Pinkerton and against Manchester Memorial. Dropping a couple of spots, from 8th to 10th, was Nashua South, which [...]

A bad shot, usually

Posted by gary fitz

After covering the Class I girls tournament for years, one thing in particular baffles me. Why do coaches allow players to attempt so many 3-pointers?
In last night’s semifinal between Oyster River and Souhegan, there were an incredible 31 attempts from beyond the arc. Two found their way into the basket, or six percent.
The winning team [...]

My pick: It’s Salem again

Posted by gary fitz

After watching them play at Nashua South on Tuesday night, I came to this conclusion. Once again, Salem is the best boys basketball “team” in Class L.
Why the quotes around team. Because that’s exactly how they play, as a team. It was never more evident than in last year’s final against Trinity. Certain very talented Trinity players [...]

Peter on the pucks

Posted by gary fitz

Nashua Athletic Director Peter Casey has taken an expected diplomatic, wait-and-see, patient approach when it comes to the future of high school hockey in Nashua. The two teams, North and South, have one win and a tie between them in regular season Division I play when they collide for the final time Wednesday at 6:10 [...]

Will Zocco stay at URI?

Posted by gary fitz

Nashua South senior David Zocco agreed to a scholarship offer from the University of Rhode Island expecting to play for coach Darren Rizzi.
But after just one year as head coach at his alma mater, Rizzi is leaving to take an assistant coaching position with the Miami Dolphins.
According to Roger Brown’s report at NH Football Report, Zocco [...]

Home court? Hold on

Posted by gary fitz

With the first two rounds of the Class L boys basketball tournament at the home of the higher seeds this year, it would seem a huge advantage for teams finishing in the top four. But so far, four of the top five teams have played better on the road.
Top ranked Trinity is unbeaten at home, but [...]

Pretty hot on D-III ice

Posted by gary fitz

It’s a division that’s been ruled by one team, Souhegan, over the last three years.
But if you want to see a true wide open competition, check out Division III boys hockey. There’s not much that separates the top teams, if anything. Any one of five or six — Souhegan, Bedford, Kennett, Somersworth, even Pembroke — [...]

Why it’s a bad idea

Posted by gary fitz

For years there were two things you could count on if you advanced to the quarterfinals of a state basketball tournament. You’d be playing at a neutral site and it would be somewhat centrally located.
Saturday’s Class I girls quarterfinals will demonstrate why playing the semifinal at the home of the top seed is a bad idea.
Kennett [...]

Cuts coming elsewhere

Posted by gary fitz

While Nashua wrestled with potential cuts to middle school sports, high schools in New York are cutting back on games to save money.
Baseball teams that normally play 24 games will play 20. Football team that schedule 10 games will be cut to nine or eight.
Class I athletic directors in New Hampshire voted last year to [...]

NH preps are loaded

Posted by gary fitz

Once again, New Hampshire is home to some of the best boys basketball players in the country in the Class of 2009. And once again, only one is playing in a New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association division.
The top two players are both headed to the No. 1 ranked college team, the University of Connecticut. They [...]
