Boston’s media war heats up with Shaughnessy joining the SportsHub and Mike Reiss leaving the Boston Globe for ESPN-Boston

Posted by george scione

So things got a little more interesting over the last couple of days in the current war between media outlets in Boston.
CBS radio’s The SportsHub, 98.5-FM, scooped up another Boston media celeb by giving Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy a Saturday afternoon radio show.
While that move give the Boston Globe some more exposure, management must [...]

Rodney Harrison will add spark to NBC’s ‘Football Night in America’ broadcasts

Posted by george scione

Hey Bill Belichick, Rodney Harrison is shooting his mouth off about Peyton Manning.
Oh wait, there’s nothing Belichick can do about it anymore.
Harrison, known for laying the smack down both on and off the field prior to his stint as a Patriots safety, wasn’t pulling any punches in his first day of retirement from the field.
The [...]

Tim Neverett an early hit doing play-by-play for the Pittsburgh Pirates

Posted by george scione

It appears that Nashua’s own Tim Neverett is holding his own out in Pittsburgh. Well, that’s according to Bob Smizik - BOB SMIZIK’S BLOG - of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
According to Smizik, “Neverett calls a good game, keeps up with the action and seems to blend well with his color analysts.”
The Pittsburgh fans seem to second [...]

Comcast makes fans everywhere happy adding NFL Network and ESPNU to its Digital Classic level

Posted by george scione

Well, it’s official. I will not be paying extra for NFL Network. Then again, neither will anyone else that is currently paying for the Digital Classic level of service through Comcast.

In a release sent out this morning, Comcast Corporation and the National Football League announced an agreement has been reached. Check that, it’s a “long-term [...]

Comcast and NFL Network are at it again

Posted by george scione

Just when I’m ready to give up on the idea of getting NFL Network for the first time starting this fall, Comcast has to go and make me think about it all over again.

The two sides have picked up negotiations again, allowing Comcast to carry the network while the sides try to iron things out.

A [...]

John Madden retires from broadcasting - it’s about time

Posted by george scione

John Madden retired Thursday. My honest response to that statement: SO WHAT!
Look, I understand that the 73 year old has had a long-storied career. But the broadcasting portion of it just hasn’t inspired anything more than fits of laughter or a few “what the heck is he talking about” moments.
Now I understand that others want [...]

So the Celtics have no chance with an injured Kevin Garnett . . . seriously?

Posted by george scione

Pennant fever it ain’t, but some kind of illness is gripping the Hub. It’s holding on for dear life with fans, commentators, radio’s talking heads and even newspaper scribes.
Can you believe it? Without Kevin Garnett the pundits all declare that the Boston Celtics will not win another NBA title. Seriously? No, seriously? Please guys and [...]

Metro writer Bob Halloran’s view on the Hanley Ramirez trade is laughable

Posted by george scione

And the Column of the Year goes to . . . Channel 5’s Bob Halloran for his piece “Seller’s regret on Hanley may be in future“, which ran in the March 26 edition of the Metro Boston.
Halloran dug himself a hole from the outset, asking readers if they want Hanley Ramirez or Jed Lowrie playing [...]

Journalism ethics 101

Posted by george scione

So the rumors were true. Manchester’s own Chip Kelly is taking over for Mike Bellotti as head football coach at the University of Oregon.
In early December, a deal was struck to keep Kelly in town long term. The deal had Bellotti taking over as the college’s athletic director and Kelly sliding into the head coach position. Originally, this plan was not supposed [...]

Carchedi is Lights Out

Posted by george scione

With the door now open on a hidden jewel, NESN cannot shut that door ever again.
Since the demise of CN8, I’ve been wondering what happened to John Carchedi. The Walpole native was the lone bright spot of Comcast’s Boston programming. He’s back, and this time on a network that actually draws more viewers than staff [...]
