Tom Watson’s British Open run made golf worth watching

Filed under Golf by george scione at 9:31 am

Thank you Tom Watson. Thank you for giving me a reason to spend time watching a game - which I love to get out and play - on a TV.

The 59-year-old golfer did more in one day to make me pay attention to professional golf than that young whippersnapper Tiger Woods has done in his entire career.

Yes, I am calling Tiger Woods diminutive and insignificant. The hype surrounding him has reached levels equal to Terrell Owens’ morning mirror talk. There is no doubt that Woods has owned the game of golf in recent years, but from where I sit there has never been a need to go out of my way to watch him or any other golfer play in a tournament on TV - all majors included.

Watson’s historic run was something magical. It was Roy Hobbs hitting a home run to win it all for the New York Knights in “The Natural” - the movie version that is. True, Sunday’s final round and four-hole playoff ended more like the Bernard Malamud novel. Simply put Watson struck out to end the game. Still, I couldn’t stay away from the TV, radio or internet to find out what was going on as the day progressed.

Never has Tiger Woods pulled me into the world of woods, irons, drivers and those unforgiving putters. Watson knows what I mean.

I admit it. I was happy the day Woods missed the cut.

I was even happier to spend a good portion of my Sunday watching golf on TV in hopes that an American not with the name Tiger Woods would make history.

Guess it wasn’t meant to be. Now I’ll just go back to my normal Sunday rituals - playing golf or avoiding it all together.
