Reading when you were a kid was more about the pictures and less about the words. The same thing goes for fashion. It’s not all about the glossy mags and advertisements. Several magazines, editors and other fashion gurus have capitalized on the success of their main forms of publication by publishing supplemental books, full of pictures with quick, easy snippets to read. The latest to hit the shelves is “Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair from the Beauty Authority,” by Melissa Schweiger. Pick up a copy and get ready to hit the store in the Pheasant Lane Mall when it opens in May and try out all the tricks and tips. The book hit store shelves today (April 15) and retails for $27.95.
Other makeup books to check out: n “The 5-Minute Face: The Quick & Easy Makeup Guide for Every Woman,” by Carmindy, makeup expert on “What Not to Wear.” n “Marie Claire Makeup,” by the editors at Marie Claire. For the fashion challenged, try these: n “The Little Black Book of Style,” by Nina Garcia. Garcia is best known as a “Project Runway” judge and fashion director at Elle. There have been reports this week that her job at Elle is no more, but that shouldn’t stop you from taking her advice. n “The Lucky Shopping Manual: Building and Improving Your Wardrobe Piece by Piece,” by Kim Frances and Andrea Linett. I picked this one up the minute it hit store shelves. It’s simple, fun to look at and easy to follow. n “In Style: Style 101,” by the editors of In Style magazine, “In Style: Instant Style (Your Season-By-Season Guide for Work and Weekend),” by Kathleen Fifield, "In Style: Secrets of Style: The Complete Guide to Dressing Your Best Every Day," by Lisa Arbetter and "In Style Getting Gorgeous," by Jennifer Tung. The editors at In Style decided one book just wasn't enough. n “Glamour’s Big Book of Dos and Don’ts: Fashion Help for Every Woman,” by Cindi Leive, editor of Glamour magazine. n “Harper’s Bazaar Great Style: Best Ways to Update Your Look,” by Jenny Levin, editor and writer at Harper’s Bazaar magazine. n “Dress Your Best: The Complete Guide to Finding the Style That’s Right for Your Body,” by Clinton Kelly and Stacy London of “What Not to Wear” fame. Just shut up and read. At least, that’s what Stacy would tell you. n “Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style”: Who doesn’t love Tim Gunn of Project Runway? OK, I know there’s a few people out there, but with his great catch phrases and keen fashion sense, he’s definitely worth listening to. He’s so popular, he even got his own spin-off show “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style.” Add commentsearcharchives
