Lowell progressing

Alan | 19 April, 2008 18:22 | (61)

Mike Lowell is hitting balls off a batting tee and, unless there are unforeseen problems, could be playing in a rehab game or by the end of next week.

On the disabled list with a sprained left thumb since April 10, Lowell took 35 swings Saturday with no pain. While a lengthy rehab assignment seems unlikely, Lowell would need some game at bats before returning to the Red Sox lineup.

"At least now we're looking at timetables,'' Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.

Also on the injury front, Coco Crisp says his sore hamstring is feeling better. He could return to action on Monday morning.
