This and that

To the surprise of no one who has paid any attention to what Terry Francona says, the Red Sox manager will go with the same lineup tonight in Game 2 of the ALDS as he used in Game 1.First, there is the fact that this is the lineup Francona has been aiming to use routinely for a couple of months: Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Mike Lowe,, J.D. Drew, Jason Varitek, Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo. Then there is the fact that the Red Sox won Game 1 with this lineup, so why tinker? As Mike Timlin hit ground balls to his son at second base, a couple of hours before the gates opened Friday, one scribe cracked, "Geez, I didn't know Pedroia was that small." When Daisuke Matsuzaka takes the mound tonight he will be aiming to achieve one more first. Two other Japanese pitchers have started games in the MLB post-season, Hideo Nomo and Masato Yoshi, and both are 0-1 in the playoffs. Red Sox pitching legend Luis Tiant is due to toss out the cermonial first pitch tonight.
