Thanks to WBC, Sox place Matsuzaka on DL

After his triumphant performance in the World Baseball Classic, Daisuke Matsuzaka returned to his paying job and showed signs of fatigue, which reached their zenith Tuesday night in Oakland. Smoltz ahead of schedule?

After throwing 40 pitches this morning, his workout of the spring off a mound, John Smoltz apparently feels fairly strong. After the workout, Red Sox manager Terry Franconca suggested that Smoltz could be back before June 1.
Asked if that meant sometime in mid-May, Francona told reporters “Yeah, sure.”
