Wagner is coming to Sox after all
Filed under Uncategorized by alan greenwood at 10:56 pm
Remember all of the reports in the last 24 hours claiming that the Red Sox-Mets deal to bring reliever Billy Wagner had reached an impasse? Forget them all. The Red Sox announced today that the veteran lefty will be coming to Boston in exchange for two players to be named later.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona is encouraging folks to maintain realistic expectations, considering Wagner’s age (38), the fact that he is coming off Tommy John surgery last season and that he has worked only two innings for the Mets this year.
As for Jonathan Papelbon, he is saying that remarks attributed to him Sunday expressing reservations over the acquisition of Wagner and the disruption it may cause the Red Sox bullpen were taken out of context. Francona referred to “some atrocious reporting” on Papelbon’s statements.
