Many bars and restaurants around here fail to offer a wide assortment of Mexican alcohols. In fact, many locals maintain that Corona (ick) is the solution to many of life's problems. I recently moved here from Southern California where I went to college. Without getting into much detail, I hold myself as somewhat of a connoisseur of the country's proudest libations...with the exception of cheaper tequilas of course. I had set out from my apartment near Downtown Nashua to meet up with a co-worker for a few cold ones. It was a breezy 28 degrees as I approached West Pearl, when I received a call from my inquiring co-worker. "Where are we going?", he said. I gave him the low-down. "Martha's is a night-club, The Garden doesn't serve Gin, Peddlers has a cover...," he interupted me. "Let's go to Margarita's!" It was settled. As we sat, I quizzed the waitress on their beer selection. After she listed the typical, tiring list she gets to the good stuff, Pacifico. I immediatly interupted her because I knew in only a few minutes I was leaving the frozen tundra that is Southern New Hampshire and reconvening with good memories on the sand and in the surf. I plunged the lime and took my first, indulging sip. Never has Mexican beer tasted so delicious. I highly recommend that you try Pacifico if you ever come across it. The Mexicans that brew it will be truely greatful and I run the possibility of having someone to enjoy it with by Springtime. Just in case you're a visual person like I am, here's a photo. I like the big one.

Your topic of Mexican beer is perhaps a little broad. Furthermore much of Mexican beer had been greatly influenced by Europeans especially the Germans and Austrians. This is why so many of their (Mexican) beers are Vienna-style largers and pilsners. While I agree that Pacifico is slightly better than Corona, I feel that they are akin to tasting Michelob and Bud Light. One must remember that these two beers are owned and brewed by the same company - Grupo Modelo. This company, ironically is owned 50% by Anheuser-Busch - you know, the Bud, Michelob and Natural light etc. folks. Mexican beer, like the U.S., is predominantly a homogenous sampling of pilsner-like beers. I have been hearing a buzz about the resurgence of Mexican microbreweries. I cannot speak of these but there is hope that the Mexican people will demand real beer as I and many others here in the U.S do. Posted by: Seacoast Swiller | March 04, 2008, 23:07
I agree with SS. Maybe take this topic and do a comparison of as many Mexican beers as you can get around here (check Hannafords). What about Sol, Dos Equis, and my favorite, Negro Modelo? I know it would be a chore, but sometimes you have to force yourself to do things in the name of your career... :) Posted by: Kathleen | March 15, 2008, 15:50Add commentThe ContributorsNews editor Vanessa Palange will try anything once and most more than once. There are very few items on her do-not-drink list. Copy editor and page designer Emily Reily enjoys a drink now and then and likes a nice bottle of Moet for special occasions. Photographer Grant Morris has never been one to turn his nose up at anything... except tequila. Copy editor Jason Sparapani likes a good whiskey. Region editor Melanie Hitchcock is happiest when she is drinking a good witbier or riesling. Lifestyles editor Deidre Ashe thinks you can't go wrong when chocolate and alcohol are combined.
